Ekkehard Altenburger

Ekkehard Altenburger was born in the south of Germany. After studying at Edinburgh College of Art and Hochschule für Künste Bremen, he graduated in 1999 with an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art. His work operates within an urban setting, and aspects of architecture and the urban landscape are major influences. Over the past few years he has worked in the public arena, with art projects in Germany, Italy, Portugal and the UK.

His recent exhibitions include ‘Kino’ at SculptureSpace, New York (2005); the RBS Gallery, London (2004); ‘Colourspace’ at the APT Gallery, London (2003); ‘Pride of the Valley sculpture park’, Surrey (2003); Caldas da Rainha Sculpture Symposium, Portugal (2002); Chelsea Physics Garden, London (2002); ‘Club’ at the Beaconsfield Gallery, London (2001); and ‘a hora azul’, a solo show at the Goethe Institute, Brazil (2001).

Recent public sculptures and commissions include the Contemporary War Memorial in Kilkenny Limestone at the Streatham Memorial Gardens, London (2006); two marble sculptures and design implementation of a rock garden with sculptural element at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead (2005); five granite sculptures for Royal Arsenal Gardens, London (2001/2); and the Eglisau Sculpture Trail in Switzerland (1999).

Altenburger is the recipient of a number of awards including the Sculpture Space residency programme (2005); the London Visual Arts grant (2003); the Royal Society of British Sculptors Bursary award (2002); and the Year of the Artist residency programme in London (2000/1).
