Rupert Merton
Rupert Merton’s studio is in south-west London where he combines sculpture ceramics and video. He learnt to work with clay as an apprentice at Tingewick Pottery, then spent twelve years as a music publisher before going back to art while living in Italy. Returning to London he began developing his interest in sculpture and animation. This resulted in a series of portrait commissions in clay and bronze.
In 2005 he directed documentary films about sculptor Mark Coreth which were eventually commissioned by the Discovery Channel. He now devotes himself to sculpture using clay, plaster and bronze. His most recent work is in bronze resin, which he started using as a solution to the flotation of ‘Bull Hippos Fighting’. His larger forms are inspired by natural organisms, especially trees such as the silk floss.
