“I make small clay models of ideas which I either fire or cast into plaster. Then I decide whether to take the idea further, to scale it up into marble or just to leave it for the moment.
Ideas come round again even after many years. There seems to be an urge to express something in particular which is underpinning each sculpture and that doesn’t change much. Different materials may give it a very different appearance but there is a thread running through them all.
I love working with my hands to bring the sculpture to life. It is as if I am pushing life into the piece with every touch and at the end the work contains this. I don’t know if a keen observer can pick this up or if only I am aware of it. But for me this intimately knowing something is there and that makes it harder to let go of a piece when it is done. Like a love affair that has a sell by date.“
